It's a miracle that Trinity Church is standing today.  The cornerstone of Trinity Church was laid in 1928. Shortly after construction began, The professional fund raiser, who had been engaged to secure the necessary funds by public subscription, absconded with the money. Fortunately, he was shortly apprehended, and most of the funds were recovered. Construction then continued until the contractor was forced into voluntary bankruptcy. At that point, construction was again halted. Two such catastrophic blows might have doomed most congregations, but not Trinity. The members decided to temporarily abandon efforts to complete the structure. Instead they would roof over the completed basement and use it for worship and Sunday School. For many years, Trinity was known as "The church without a top".

By 1956, the congregation had raised enough money to begin work again. On November 11,1956, Trinity Evangelical Reformed Church was dedicated and its house of worship finally completed. It became known by its current name, Trinity United Church of Christ in 1957.
